I originally posted this list at EF, but those idiots didn't have anything good to say about it but bad things...

*Idiots*

***

(Nice cookie deleter, file shredder, and registry cleaner.)

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

"CCleaner is the number-one tool for cleaning your Windows PC. It protects your privacy online and makes your computer faster and more secure. Easy to use and a small, fast download."

***

(This let's you surf the web anonymously.)

http://www.torproject.org/

"Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. Tor provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy."

***

(This adds extra IP filters to your Peerblocking programs)

http://blocklistpro.com/download-cen...klist-manager/

"The Blocklist Manager is an extensive IP address management toolkit which you can use to download, import and convert large amounts of IP addresses into a 20+ different formats. You can then export those IP addresses into the blocklist format of your choice, ready to be used with your favourite Firewall or IP blocking applications."

***

(This is like an external firewall for your machine.)

http://www.peerblock.com/

"PeerBlock lets you control who your computer "talks to" on the Internet. By selecting appropriate lists of "known bad" computers, you can block communication with advertising or spyware oriented servers, computers monitoring your p2p activities, computers which have been "hacked", even entire countries! They can't get in to your computer, and your computer won't try to send them anything either."

***

(This is **THE BEST** firewall I've EVER used! It works a lot like Window's defender, but it has a sandbox mode, and a database for questionable programs that you are currently running.)

http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-...t-security.php

"Why Use Comodo Internet Security?

Comodo Internet Security is the free, multi-layered security application that keeps hackers out and personal information in.

Built from the ground upwards with your security in mind, Internet Security offers 360° protection by combining powerful Antivirus protection, an enterprise class packet filtering firewall, and an advanced host intrusion prevention system called Defense+.

Unlike the stripped down versions of commercial software that other software vendors offer for free, this is the full, completely functional version of the product."

***

(Let's run programs and links in a "sandboxed" mode.)

http://www.sandboxie.com/

"Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

Benefits of the Isolated Sandbox

Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.
Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows.
Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system.
Windows Stays Lean: Prevent wear-and-tear in Windows by installing software into an isolated sandbox."

***

(Good, free antivirus from Windows, and because it is from Windows, you know it will be extraordinarily compatible with any Windows' OS.)

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

"About Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software."

***

(A search engine that DOESN'T store your personal information.)

http://www.ixquick.com/

"What Makes Ixquick Special
Ixquick is the world's most powerful search engine employing the most advanced metasearch technology.

Ixquick search results are more comprehensive and more accurate than other search engines. Ixquick's unique capabilities include a Universal Power Search, a global search and power refinement.

Find phone numbers and addresses worldwide with Ixquick's International Phone Directory, or search through 18 million hours of video fun with Ixquick's Video search.
Ixquick search engine protects your Privacy!

Ixquick does NOT record your IP address!
Read more on our Privacy position or go directly to Ixquick's Privacy policy."

(A great, free game making software. Also, you hold ALL intellectual property rights to the games you make - if you make the game, it fully belongs to you!)

http://creators.xna.com/en-US/

But you will need this, before you install it:

http://www.microsoft.com/express/ << Also, a free download.)

***

(About.com \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/

http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/...ispyware_2.htm

says this anti-spyware is BETTER than spybot search and destroy.)

http://netforbeginners.about.com/gi/...tware/adaware/

"Lavasoft has been the benchmark spyware-defense tool for years. Their Ad-Aware product has won the trust of millions of users. Although it doesn’t have the nifty shredding and email opt-out lists of Spybot, Ad-Aware does perform realtime protection, and it auto updates its definition lists to remain current. Up until 2006, combining Spybot and Ad-Aware was the smartest (and the cheapest) way to defend your compute against spyware. Things are different now, because Number 1 below has set the high bar even higher for 2007."

***

(This program is A LOT BETTER than Daemon tools lite OR pro.)

http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/mi...c-overview.htm

"MagicDisc is freeware. It is very helpful utility designed for creating and managing virtual CD drives and CD/DVD discs. For anyone who deals with CD-based programs – it is a MUST. MagicDisc allows you to use almost all CD/DVD image without burning them onto CD or DVD in order to easily access your favorite games, music, or software programs ---- It works like a real CD/DVD-ROM: You can run programs, play games, or listen to music from your virtual CD-ROM. Allowing you to run your game images at over 200x faster than from a conventional CD/DVD-ROM. MagicDisc is a powerful utility that uses a unique combination of options to ensure a perfect back-up every time. Partner with MagicISO, Your original games/program discs can be safely stored away, MagicISO mean that you always have your expensive media stored safely as CD/DVD image file on your hard drive, and use them with MagicDisc just like using the original discs. At the office: Program discs and many other applications generally require the original disc to be in the computer's CD-ROM drive. This restricts the amount of people in your office who can have access to the same software at the same time without the cost of additional discs. MagicDisc virtual drives resolve that problem for you. No more hunting around the offices for that elusive disc you need to run your application, everything you require is just a click away."

***

(This allows you to run several different OS's on your PC at once.)

http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

"VMware Player is the easiest way to run multiple operating systems at the same time on your PC. With its user-friendly interface, VMware Player makes it effortless for anyone to try out Windows 7, Chrome OS or the latest Linux releases, or create isolated virtual machines to safely test new software and surf the Web. VMware Player can also be used to run a virtual copy of an old PC so that you can recycle the old machines you have under your desk or stored in the closet."

***
(Amazing picture media gatherer and editor.)

http://en.softonic.com/s/picasa-3

***

(Really cool media player. Although I think you may already have this, LoL. But just encase you don't...)

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

"It plays everything!"
The media player that fills all your needs. It can handle DVDs, (S)VCDs, Audio CDs, web streams, TV cards and much more.

You don't need to keep track of a dozen codec packs you need to have installed. VLC has all codecs built-in. It comes with support for nearly all codec there is.

And what is more it can even play back the file or media if it is damaged! Missing or broken pieces are no stop to VLC, it plays all the video and audio information that's still intact."

***

(Awesome codecs for your media players.)

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_mega_codec_pack.htm

"With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular movie formats and even some rare formats. This package is mainly for power users and people who do their own encodings."

I'll add the links later, but I recommend:

GIMP:
Possibly the best free solution for photoshop, I currently use and love it.

PAINT.NET:
Another good one, but I still recommend GIMP the most.

Gizmodo Media Manager:
Like daemon tools but includes a lot of extra crap.

HxD:
Best free Hex Editor you can find.

I'll add others, but I don't always remember them well because I have upgraded to glorious Linux.

It'll all come in time, no worries.

Just pick a few things out of the list that you might be interested in, and we'll give you a hand in whatever we can.
