Denmark sprang the first surprise of Euro 2012 when they defeated World Cup runners-up Holland in Kharkiv.
The Dutch will be kicking themselves after dominating possession,
but after spurning several good chances early on they were hit by a
classic sucker-punch. Michael Krohn-Dehli latched on to a ricochet to
fire the ball home through Stekelenburg's legs with virtually Denmark's
first good opportunity.
On a sultry evening in eastern Ukraine,
the Dutch set a slow tempo in the game's opening exchanges but were too
casual when opportunities did come their way, with wasted chances for
Van Persie and Robben before Denmark's goal summing things up for the
men in orange.
For all their potent attacking talent, the Dutch
looked shaky across their backline, and once they realised this the
Danes grew in confidence.
Morten Olsen's side were not content
just to sit back once they went ahead, but they coped admirably when
Holland finally played with more urgency after the break.
As the
game wore on, it felt like it would not be Holland's night. The referee
waved away a late penalty claim for handball against Denmark's Lars
Jacobsen, capping a poor evening for the much-fancied Dutch.
